Archaeology

Archaeology – Fun for all ages!

Archaeology is the study of past peoples and cultures, based on the artifacts, ecofacts, and sites left behind. In a less romantic light, archaeologists essentially study dead people’s garbage (!) in order to find out all we can about their everyday lives.

The field of archaeology is composed of a number of different subfields or specialties. In my regular job, I am a zooarchaeologist. Zooarchaeologists specialize in the analysis and interpretation of faunal or animal remains; basically, all the bones, teeth, shell, and scales found at prehistoric and historic sites. Zooarchaeological research can provide information on past dietary patterns, resource procurement, environmental conditions, and domestication, among other things.
